SSD solid-state drives at the current level of technology development have significantly supplanted classic hard drives. On their side, amazing performance, low power consumption and heat dissipation. It is already clear that the SSD is the future, but it is too early to discount the good old HDD.
When the question arises of replacing a failed “screw” or upgrading an assembly that is not the first freshness, then an unprepared user’s head starts to spin. The abundance of offers, options and models just rolls over!
You can, of course, not bother, and take a drive, which is called “for all the money”, but it’s better to approach the issue wisely and buy what you need, having previously outlined the range of tasks assigned to the hard drive.
Hard drive lines
As in the well-known proverb: “Know your hearth for every cricket”, so in the extensive model range of the drive family there is its own gradation and thematic lines. Each of them is designed for specific operating conditions, in which the full potential of the disk is revealed.
For mass use
A family of drives for non-specialized computers. The most extensive line of hard drives in the models of which the balance of speed and reliability is observed. The main application is home and office workstations. As a rule, hard drives of this class are equipped with a 64 MB cache. Noise, heat dissipation and energy efficiency indicators are within the average values. In general, a simple workhorse, without any special frills and ambitions for leadership.
In the line of universal discs, you can find models with spindle speeds from 5400 rpm to 7200 rpm. The first copies are quieter and more “cold”, but at the same time slower.
If the HDD is intended for long-term storage of user data, the option of installing a slow disk is more preferable.
As an example of designation, the manufacturer Western Digital has the last letter in the model name just indicating the rotation speed: Z – 5400 rpm, X – 7200 rpm. Universal models, the designation of which ends with Z, is a discontinued “green” line of drives, which was distinguished by low noise and the lowest heat dissipation in the class.
For gaming PC and graphic simulation systems
A special line of drives designed for installation in high-performance systems that require high speed processing of large volumes of small files (3D image processing, heavy games, operating system loading, mathematical modeling). A distinctive feature of these disks is technical solutions to reduce the vibration of moving elements and excellent indicators of the head positioning time over an arbitrary area of the drive pancake surface. This is achieved through the use of two drives in the disk head positioning system.
The minimum spindle speed for this class of devices is 7200 rpm, and the cache size reaches 64 MB. As a price for high performance – slightly increased levels of noise and heat generation.
For network storage
The main element of drives is work in the mode of constant loads according to the formula 24/7 (file hosting, network storages of small organizations, etc.)
The model range of drives for network storages has its own characteristics. First, the amazing data transfer rate, which is a solid 150-180 MB / s. Secondly, with a dense arrangement of drives inside the network storage enclosure, hard drives of this line are characterized by low heat dissipation and power consumption. Thirdly, special design solutions are implemented in the drives, minimizing the beating of moving parts and nullifying the vibration of the entire device, and, consequently, its detrimental effect on drives installed in the neighborhood.
As a rule, the cache size varies from 64 MB to 256 MB, and the spindle speeds are in the range of 5400-7200 rpm. Naturally, all representatives of this class support operation as part of RAID arrays of various configurations.
For video surveillance systems
Video surveillance drives are characterized by low rotation speed (5400-5900 rpm) and best-in-class vibration protection of internal components. To ensure high access speed, the disks are equipped with a cache, the volume of which reaches 256 MB. At the level of the HDD controller, a number of special algorithms are implemented to ensure the safety and integrity of each recorded frame.
Disks for video surveillance systems can simultaneously record video streams broadcast from 64 HD cameras.
You can use such drives at home, but their operation in a PC is unlikely to be a pleasure! Painfully they are slow, noisy and specific.
For servers and high-speed systems
Business-critical systems require good quality components. Special hard drives of the highest degree of reliability are the key to a long and uninterrupted functioning of the IT infrastructure.
Drives of this class are distinguished by: unprecedented high time between failures (2.5 million hours), high spindle speed (up to 10,000 rpm), large cache (up to 512 MB), high transfer rate (up to 267 MB / s ), high-precision vibration dampening system.
The element of these drives is to work as a part of the server equipment of file storages, data processing centers, support of responsible, critical business processes of a corporate level.
Theoretically, absolutely any hard drive can be installed in the system unit. But will such an assembly suit the user? Still, it is better to select and install a drive based on the needs and tasks performed by the computer. Only with this approach at the output can you get an optimal system in terms of investment / return.
