The kitchen is a receptacle for a wide variety of appliances, utensils and a dozen items from spoons to large pots, cauldrons and ducklings. Here we cook, wash dishes, make coffee in the morning, most often we eat right there in the kitchen. How to make this space as convenient and functional as possible and how to properly place numerous coffee makers-mixers-combiners-microwaves?
triangle rule
The three main elements in any kitchen are the stove, refrigerator and sink. They make up the vertices of the so-called “working triangle”. Approximately 1.2ā2.3 meters between the refrigerator and the sink, 1.2ā1.8 meters between the sink and the stove, and 3ā4 meters between the far corners of the triangle. The area of āā\u200b\u200bthis triangle is preferably 5ā7 m², less is crowded, more is too far to run. This formula, derived by designers empirically, is considered the most convenient for everyday life and is used as a standard in kitchen layouts of all types and sizes.
The simplest principle to remember, whether you have a linear, L-shaped or U-shaped kitchen – there should be free countertop space near each of these three elements. The stove is right next to the sink – don’t go to the sink at all while something is being cooked, or you risk getting burned while washing dishes. Yes, and there is nowhere to put the dishes, the sink definitely needs space for drying dishes.
The stove is very close to the refrigerator – it is a fire hazard due to a serious temperature difference. If you have everything built-in – both the oven and the refrigerator – then you can put them side by side, but still undesirable. The refrigerator at the sink is inconvenient to get and lay food, the battery is again too hot.
A sink blocked by other appliances is bad in any case, since you have to reach and jump all over the kitchen to put the washed dishes somewhere. The perfect match for the sink is the dishwasher. And communications are all nearby, and putting dishes into the dishwasher from the sink is much faster.
Usually, even in the smallest kitchens, you can find free space to spread the refrigerator, hob or stove and sink in different places. For example, in the corners there is a refrigerator and a sink, in the center there is a hob and an oven.
Don’t break up your workspace

Within the “working triangle” you must move freely and without obstacles. You should not cut the space, for example, between the stove and the sink with some one-piece full-height cabinet or the same refrigerator. Move everything high to the edges of the headset or take it out to the corners.
Do not place the hob in a corner
First, it’s not ergonomic. On burners that are closer to the wall, it will not be possible to comfortably unfold the dishes, the handles of the pans will stick to the wall, and it will be inconvenient to reach for the far corner frying surface. In addition, you will have to wash off not one wall, but two whole walls.

And, finally, if you have a window right next to you, it is a fire hazard, since curtains can ignite from any spark. The oven, if it is located here under the hob, may not open at all, resting on a window sill or radiator.
The same applies to the location at the entrance to the kitchen – inadvertently touching a pot of boiling soup with your hand is such an adventure.
Instead of taking into account a bunch of nuances, it is better to move the cooking area away from the corner, and plan a refrigerator or sink in this place.
Is an extract really necessary?
Yes! Even if every free centimeter of the kitchen is important to you, do not be stingy and spend 50-60 of them on installing the hood. It will protect you not only from unpleasant odors, but also greatly simplify cleaning in the kitchen, taking on all the main fumes from the cooking dish. The optimal installation height of the hood is 60 cm from the hob, just the standard height of the kitchen backsplash. Below – you will start hitting your forehead or elbows, above 75 cm – bad traction.

The design, type and appearance of the hood is completely up to your taste. Just remember that recirculating hoods without being connected to ventilation are not very effective and do not protect against odors.
Where to put the microwave?
Definitely not in the fridge. There are much more convenient options for the location of the microwave. The easiest is not to buy it at all, but to choose an oven with a microwave function.

The most important thing in choosing a place for it is the optimal height. Focus on family members with the smallest stature. It is important that they can reach the door and comfortably get not only a small sandwich, but also a full plate of hot borscht. Usually microwaves are located no higher than 130-140 cm from the floor.
What to do with small kitchen appliances?
We often acquire a whole armada of small appliances: from coffee makers needed daily to waffle irons, juicers, vacuum sealers and other devices used only on holidays.
What you use every day – leave it on the countertop if space allows, or place it in a separate cabinet from which it will be convenient to get equipment.
Everything else to store in plain sight is unaesthetic and inconvenient. For rarely used appliances, select a separate deep cabinet. This can be a floor-mounted roll-out compartment with a depth of 30-40 cm, an exit niche or a hinged pencil case. Leave the interior space as free as possible, without small shelves and dividers so that the appliances are not cramped.

Remember that some types of equipment can be built in, thereby once and for all resolving the issue of its placement. Grills, vacuum sealers, steamers, coffee machines, water dispensers (including hot water) can all fit beautifully into a set if space and budget allow you.
Separate storage areas
The main rule is that everything important should be at hand. You don’t have to run across the kitchen for a spoon to stir the stew on the stove. They should not unload food near the sink and carry it three meters to the refrigerator, because there is nowhere to put it. Should not jump over the table to get some food during cooking. Therefore, storage areas should depend on the destination area of āā\u200b\u200bthe kitchen set.
For example, next to the stove and oven, it is best to store cutlery, spices, oils, sauces, dishes – everything that you need directly while cooking on the stove. Usually next to the stove is the “prep” area – the part of the countertop where you cut, chop, mix and serve. There, concentrate the storage of the main part of the dishes. Next to the sink there is a cleanliness area, storage of washing appliances in a floor cabinet and some of the dishes in a wall cabinet. Closer to the refrigerator, you can plan food cabinets, as well as a place to store rarely used household appliances. In general, customize the kitchen for you, not yourself for the kitchen.
Use storage organizers
There is a sea of āāāāorganization options for storing dishes and cutlery inside cabinets. Special dividers for lids, grids and racks for dishes, limiters and trays for kitchen appliances and other things. All of them are designed to save your nerves and keep your closets in order.
Alternate different types of cabinets in the kitchen depending on your needs. Deep drawers are good for bulky dishes, equipping them with dividers is ideal for jars and boxes. Small drawers – for cutlery and kitchen items such as napkins, corkscrews and other “flat” items. Swing cabinets with or without shelves – for small household appliances, products, spices, etc.
Do not forget about the free space on the wall – it is convenient to place on the hanging railing system what you constantly use: cutting boards, spatulas, knives, pans. At the same time, railing is not only hooks, depending on the type of suspension system, it can often be equipped with shelves of different heights, racks, glasses, and magnetic knife holders.
Narrow roll-out cabinets are ideal for tall bottles, narrow appliances such as immersion blenders. They are often placed next to the hob and oven to hide oil bottles, sauces and condiments. You can also mount glasses for cutlery and kitchen utensils such as ladles, spatulas and whisks in them.
If you have a corner kitchen, then usually a corner cabinet is not particularly ergonomic – half of its space goes deep into the headset and is not used in any way. Most often, a sink is mounted in it and used as a place for a garbage container and detergents. But if your sink is located elsewhere, then this large and deep corner cabinet can also be used effectively. There are special exit systems for corner cabinets that take up the space of the cabinet to the maximum.
Tips for a small kitchen
If the rules of the āworking triangleā do not fit your kitchen, and you canāt place the refrigerator away from the hob in any way, place at least a narrow 15 cm draw-out pencil case between them – this will be enough to compensate for the temperatures, but it will not take up too much important places.
If you can’t imagine your life without a dishwasher, choose a small sink without a drying area. So you save space, and you can dry the dishes in the dishwasher.
Give up equipment with a narrow purpose in favor of multifunctional devices. Instead of a separate microwave oven – an oven with a microwave function, instead of a separate blender, food processor and mixer – a food processor or food processor with all these functions. Even a standard kettle and clean water cooler can be replaced with one built-in dispenser or thermo pot. Think about whether you really need all kinds of vegetable dryers, ice cream makers and yogurt makers to take an entire closet under them.

Avoid built-in refrigerators. Yes, it is undeniably beautiful, but less roomy than a stand-alone model. As a result, the space in the kitchen will take the same amount, and the space in the cells is much less.
In the lower tier of the kitchen, wherever possible, make roll-out drawers. It is easier to get something from the depth in a roll-out drawer than in a hinged drawer.
